tunnel (highlighted in red). When external pressure is applied to the carpal tunnel, that pressure is transmitted to the median nerve. If a person puts significant stress upon the heel of the hand, either as a result of repetitive impacts (vibrational or otherwise) or as a result of long term weight bearing impacts, then injury to the median nerve of the hand may occur. The injury is typically experienced as numbness and tingling of the thumb, index, middle and part of the ring fingers of the hand. This phenomenon is know as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
Symptoms:
If you are suffering from Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, you may experience numbness and/or tingling in the hand and wrist, especially after long periods of computer usage. In more advanced cases, you may feel sharp pain and the symptoms may last for hours. Carpal tunnel syndrome may become so serious that you lose the use of hand, sometime permanently. Treatments for carpal tunnel syndrome include painful surgery which may leave the hand unusable for weeks.
Prevention:
The key to preventing carpal tunnel syndrome is to relax the wrist and hand muscles by providing support for the forearm, wrist and hand during computer usage. The MOWSSER will support the wrist, relieve the strain on the hand and wrist muscles, and prevent the median nerve from becoming swollen. |
